3G refers to third generation mobile telephony standards; 3G networks enable mobile operators such as Vodacom to offer voice and data products on the same network allowing for the convergence of voice and data service onto a single device - your cellular phone.

GPRS/EDGE has now been superseded by the faster 3G standard. However, GPRS/EDGE remains relevant in the South African context as 3G coverage is limited to the metropoles and cities, whilst GPRS/EDGE coverage is more extensive.
