Mobile number portability is fairly new in South Africa - it basically gives you the ability to switch service providers, ie from MTN to Vodacom or CellC without changing your number.

From what I have heard the theory is much simpler than actually carrying out the task. I have heard reports of people waiting weeks for the operation that is supposed to only take a day and getting numbers muddled up with other people - From what I have heard it sounds like more trouble than it is worth. But speak to your provider if you are interested.
