Cell C

Cell C is South Africa's third cellular provider, after Vodacom and MTN, and the first cellular provider operating a dual band GSM 900/1800 MHz network, with 7,4-million subscribers according to recent reports in Business Day and myadsl. Cell C has to date achieved 10% market share since its launch on 17 November 2001. Cell C is 100% owned by 3C Telecommunications (which in turn is 60% owned by Oger Telecom South Africa, a division of Saudi Oger, 25% by CellSAf, unencumbered (CellSAf represents over 30 black empowerment companies and trusts) and 15% by Lanum Securities SA).

Cell C has rolled out a large number of base stations and carries over 80% of its traffic on its own network and the other 20% via the Vodacom network (roaming). In terms of Internet, Cell C uses EDGE technology which, while faster than GPRS, does not provide broadband speeds. The implementation of a 3G network is being considered, but no concrete promises have been made.

Woza Wheneva : Cell C has introduced a new promotion in which users are given 20 free extra airtime minutes for every R10 (accumulated) spent on recharging.The qualifying period of the free minutes runs from Monday 00H00 to Sunday 23H59. The offer is available to all pre-paid customers and runs from 23 February to 31 May 2009. Other services from Cell C include Video messaging, MMS, internet, Voicemail etc
